How to specify

Homes put stone through daily family use — cooking, spills, cleaning products. The priority order is stain resistance first, wear resistance second, looks third; the recommendations below follow that order.

Recommended materials & thickness

MaterialThicknessWhy
Quartz20 mmNon-porous, never needs sealing, huge colour range — the default for family kitchens and vanities.
Granite18–20 mmNatural pattern with strong stain resistance once sealed; suits busy countertops and entrance floors.
Tiles600×600 mm / 9 mmBest value for floors; rectified edges allow 2 mm joints for a seamless look.
Marble16–18 mmFor bathrooms and feature areas where the look justifies honed-finish maintenance.

Design & installation notes

  • Island overhangs beyond 300 mm need steel or corbel support calculated against the slab thickness.
  • Honed finishes hide daily wear on floors; polished shows every scratch in raking light.
  • Order shower niches and window sills from the same slab as the vanity so the veining runs continuous.

Care

  • Reseal natural stone once a year with a penetrating sealer; engineered quartz never needs it.
